Teachers - Grade 2, Music Specialist
Mrs. Carolyn Steeves has been the Music Specialist at École Brentwood Elementary School since it opened in 1980. A native of New Brunswick, she received a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario. She later completed a Masters in Music at the University of Calgary specializing in Kodaly Education with Lois Choksy. Mrs. Steeves has served on the boards of the Alberta Choral Federation, the Alberta Kodaly Association and the Kodaly Society of Canada. She has been instrumental in organizing Choral and Kodaly conferences at the Provincial, National and International level.
Mrs. Steeves strongly believes and promotes the importance of the Fine Arts in elementary education. During her teaching career École Brentwood Elementary School has gained a reputation for its extensive, inclusive and high quality Choral and Fine Arts programming, Musical Theatre productions and school wide concerts. The music program at Brentwood Elementary School has received many accolades and honours over the years. Highlights include Brentwood’s participation in the mass choir at the Opening Ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary and the Senior Choir's two invitations to perform with the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra at Hope Covenant Church in Strathmore and at the Alberta Children’s Choir South Gala Concert at Knox United Church in Calgary in 2017.
Mrs. Steeves is a facilitator in the Fine Arts Collaborative for the Golden Hills School Division and was recently awarded a Steinway & Sons 2016 Top Teacher Award for outstanding instruction and leadership in music education. Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Steeves was an avid athlete. She swam competitively for many years and lifeguarded for seven summers. Her favourite teachers were Mr. Edwards, her high school music teacher and Ms. McIntyre, her childhood piano teacher. Mrs. Steeves’ favourite season is summer and she loves to travel! Mrs. Steeves is the proud mother of four children all of whom attended Brentwood!
